What would it be like to live on Mars by Cidney Swanson

What would it be like to live on Mars? There are plans to send humans to check out the red planet, and just last week someone announced plans to send a husband-wife team to do a fly-by in a couple of years.

I’ve always thought Mars would make a great setting for a novel: it is the planet most Earth-like in the solar system, with seasons and an almost twenty-four hour day. Just this week, NASA announced that once upon a time, Mars held the right conditions for microbial life. And there are plenty of scientists who think the planet could be transformed to support life again.

For right now, life on Mars would include a healthy dose of “Brrrrr!” as it is rarely above freezing. There’s less gravity, so awesome instant weight loss! There’s not the right mix of oxygen and nitrogen to breathe(and super low air pressure—think what happens when you dive to the bottom of a pool), so life would have to be lived inside a spacesuit or a pressurized building. But still, how cool would it be to live on another world and see Earth in the night sky?

My novel Saving Mars is about a human colony on Mars facing starvation. No longer on good terms with Earth, the colony must raid if they want food from their home world. Enter seventeen-year-old Jessamyn Jaarda, the best pilot Mars has ever seen. Unfortunately she’s been grounded from flight following a bit of insubordination. Now she has to convince her government that she and her autistic brother have the right stuff to be the next raiders who will go to Earth for food.

A daring journey, a little romance, a lot of heartache—when Jess’s brother is captured on Earth, what will she choose: to save her brother or save her world?
