Blog Tour: Bitter Angel (Excerpt + Giveaway)

Bitter Angel
Title: Bitter Angel
Author: Megan Hand
Publication Date: April 1, 2013
Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis: Torn between two realities.
A choice that will mean life or death.
She won’t know anything… until she wakes up.

College sophomore, Lila Spencer lived Friday night twice. She doesn’t know how or why, just that she did. As if she split in half and went in two different directions.

Out clubbing with her friends, Heather and Nilah, the girls rock it out and party hard. What begins as an innocent night will lead to a deadly fight for their lives, and Lila might be their only chance for survival.

In bed with her boyfriend, Jay, Lila is safe and warm as she drifts to sleep in the arms of the man she loves. Until she is sucked into a horrifying nightmare of her friends’ deaths.

As the sunlight warms her face on Saturday morning, the two scenarios collide. But there can be only one outcome. Will she wake up in her warm bed with Jay by her side, devastated and grieving for her friends? Or was she there to save them?

The answer is just the beginning.

Excerpt:

Unfortunately, my words didn’t faze him. He just laughed and wiped his hands on a dry piece of his shirt. “Oh man. We haven’t had one as feisty as you in…” He rested his chin between his thumb and forefinger. “Well, a long time.”

My heart hammered, but I put venom in my tone. “Where are my friends? I want to see them.” I strained forward, listening for anything that would tell me they were okay and alive.

I could hear music, loud and vulgar. Voices, all male. Laughter. Bottles clinking. I could smell the crusty scent of cigarette smoke.

He pointed to the closed door. “They’re out there, being taken care of. Don’t worry. They’ll be fine. It’s you that I’m not so sure about.”

“You sick son of a bitch. My friend could be on the brink of death, and you’re just gonna do nothing? If she dies on your hands, I swear—”

“Relax,” he cut me off. “She’s still breathing. Enough. We’ll drop her somewhere when everyone’s done. She’ll be fine.”

As I had kicked the driver’s seat earlier, I just as frantically pulled on my arms. “Let me out!” I screamed, hoping beyond hope that someone, inside or out, upstairs or down, could hear me in this hellhole. I had no idea if we were in a house or apartment building, if this was the only bedroom, or if there were others. From the looks of it and guessing the age of these guys, my bet was that this was their place of business where they brought all the girls just for this purpose. I highly doubted that they lived here, but I had nothing to back up my theory.

He rounded the bed. It creaked as he sat on the clean side. He caressed my jaw, my bloody lip. I cringed, ripping away from him, and he gripped me harder. From his pocket, he retrieved a knife. The blade winked at me in the dim light. I swallowed.

He grinned. “Still wanna scream?”

About the Author

At twelve, Megan decided to write a novel. A month later, she quit. A reading junkie by nature, she started writing again in her twenties as a way to get the voices out, because who wouldn't want to create a Real Living Person out of thin air? Megan also plays the piano and sings. She teaches little kids and takes pictures of pretty butterflies. She eats way too much chocolate, is sort of a mad scientist with her blender, and spends an unhealthy amount of time LOLing on Facebook and Twitter. She lives in Ohio with her husband and very smiley son. Bitter Angel is her first published novel.

Easter Update

Happy Easter!

First of all, hello new name! As you can see the URL and the blog header is now different. Charlie, Coffee and a Good Book is now Letter Trails.

Summer classes are about to start and after that I'm on my third year in the university. I'm pretty sure I'll be busier than ever and I might not be able to read as much as I can. I don't want to go on a hiatus so I thought, why not have guest reviewers, right? That's the reason behind changing the name. Having guest bloggers is sharing, and the previous blog name has my name on it which seems territorial in my opinion. And honestly, that name is too long. :)

I don't have guest reviewers yet but hopefully some people I asked will be able to join the bandwagon. You are also free to join! If you don't have a blog but writes, or occasionally writes reviews, I'd be glad to have you here. As most of you noticed, my YA/NA reviews are posted on Wednesdays and on Fridays I also post reviews for adult books. You can have any day of the week as your posting day so that this blog will not be stagnant. As for the genre, I would prefer having YA. Please email me or tweet me if you are interested.

Another change is that my Friday Adult Reads will not be a regular thing here anymore. April will be its last month then after that, all my adult reviews will only be posted on Goodreads. I wanted to make this blog lean more to YA and NA, maybe making it exclusive to those genres eventually. I'm not sure about that yet.

Third is I created a Soundcloud account for some read-out-louds I have. Reading out loud is my mother and I's favourite bonding activity. This will not be audiobook-esque. It will not even be a whole chapter. It will only be a part and I will not be as good as those voice talents who can change voices. I'll just leave the link around here though.

So that's it! I wish there's a giveaway or something to celebrate this re-launch but I'm a bit broke right now. I will soon though.

See you around!

Review: Falling for her Fiancé

Falling For Her Fiance
Title: Falling for her Fiancé
Author: Cindi Madsen
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis: Danielle and Wes have been best friends since college, so when Wes needs a date for his sister’s wedding and Dani needs a partner for her company’s retreat, they devise the perfect plan: a fake engagement to get through both events unscathed. Adrenaline-junkie Wes can prove to both his ex and his family that he’s well and truly moved on, and serious-minded Dani can prove to her boss that she’s worthy of the promotion he seems to only want to give to a family-oriented employee.

But amid the fake swoons, fake kisses, and forced proximity, neither expects the very real feelings that develop. There’s nothing more dangerous than falling for your best friend…but what if the landing is worth the fall?

Review:
"I think that makes it harder to get over. I guess when it comes to love, we're all kind of idiots, seeing the world with blinders."

I am a certified sucker for best-friends-turned-lovers kind of stories and Cindi Madsen didn't disappoint me. This book is one of those that would make you really feel good after reading it and make you want to daydream. Or maybe that was just me..

Wes and Dani's friendship was adorable. Despite living miles apart, they remained sweet and protective to each other. They enjoy their bets and pushes each other to achieve their best. For short, they are definitely good for each other. They've been comfortable with their friendship for so long that they didn't recognized the spark but thank god for awesome situations that led this two into each others arms.

I really enjoyed reading this one. It has moment that would definitely make your toes curl but it was balanced with some pull because of their denial. I swear I had let out some groan when they can't seem to tell that what they have isn't one sided. Wes and Dani is an awesome pair that would amuse you and will make you root for them.

Review: The Reece Malcolm List

The Reece Malcolm List
Title: The Reece Malcolm List
Author: Amy Spalding
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | TBD

Synopsis: Things I know about Reece Malcolm:

1. She graduated from New York University.
2. She lives in or near Los Angeles.
3. Since her first novel was released, she’s been on the New York Times bestseller list every week.
4. She likes strong coffee and bourbon.
5. She’s my mother.

Devan knows very little about Reece Malcolm, until the day her father dies and she’s shipped off to live with the mother she’s never met. All she has is a list of notebook entries that doesn’t add up to much.

L.A. offers a whole new world to Devan—a performing arts school allows her to pursue her passion for show choir and musicals, a new circle of friends helps to draw her out of her shell, and an intriguing boy opens up possibilities for her first love.

But then the Reece Malcolm list gets a surprising new entry. Now that Devan is so close to having it all, can she handle the possibility of losing everything?
Review:
"I'm going to warn you, because something tells me I should. But I'm planning on hugging you. Don't freak."

I love this book! I love the humor and the real emotions underneath it. I love how the author managed to conceal them so it won't be depressing without removing its effect. I love the story and I definitely love the characters.

Devan meeting her mother for the first time made me anxious about the future relationship they will have. As someone who is close with her mother, I really wished hard that this would all work out for them. There were a hints of longing on Devan and her mom but because of the unfamiliarity, they both welcomed these with uneasiness.

Devan was a character I can't see myself as to but definitely enjoyed reading. I understand her feelings, even her animosity towards her mother and father. She faced both situations at home and at school with her head high but with some doubts inside. I love how she's so into musicals and how passionate she is. She was also that loyal and trustworthy friend you'd definitely love to have around.

Reece was a puzzle to me at first. I keep wondering about her age at the beginning because she acts and talks younger that I've expected. She even dresses the way teenagers do. I love that she tries to make Devan feel that she loves her in subtle ways that doesn't go against her personality of being not showy. And based on Devan's stories, I really appreciated how she supports her daughter about her passion more than what her father did. I wish we got to know more about why he was like that to her though.

What others said about this book was definitely true. It was moving, heartbreaking but the good kind. It was half serious and not, and the author mixed both amazingly. This is the kind of books that makes you feel minus the depressing thoughts and tears.

Blog Tour: Shattered Soul (Review)

Shattered Soul
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis: Hellish Nightmare...

If seventeen-year-old Seth Bradson were to describe his life in two words, those would be the two he’d choose. Seth prefers to cope with his crappy existence by spending his days in a drug-induced haze. But when Ali Carson steps into his life, Seth finds something he’s subconsciously been seeking—a new drug, one that consumes his mind unlike any other.

Love.

In a moment of unforgivable weakness, Seth allows Ali to try crystal meth, his most addictive temptation. This single event begins the unraveling of both their lives and forces Seth to learn the definition of regret the hard way.

Review:

"Life's a bitch and then you die. So, fuck the world and let's get high."

The title fits this novel so, so much! When I agreed to read this for a review, I seriously thought I knew what I’m putting myself into, but damn, my heart was definitely shattered after reading this book.

I’m not new to this drug addiction theme since I’ve been writing my research paper since high school with this as my topic, but reading about it and making it seem like it is more real and part of someone’s life, plus Snyder’s amazing talent in making such words blow so hard, that it affects its readers.

I was first confused with Ali’s personality. Being the new kid, she gives me the impression of being a good girl, not saint-like but still good. Then all of a sudden, she gives hints to Seth about popping pills and ‘having fun,’ which contradicts to that good girl image she has on my mind. But after a while, I mean after having some fun, I got used to it and was okay with her acting wild.

What broke my heart were her actions towards Seth. A part of the blame is on Seth, it’s pretty obvious, but I hated how she acted towards him and how she keeps on ruining her life on her own that caused hurting those people who cares about her. I had this crazy nausea while reading this book, waiting for the next bad thing to happen and it felt worse after reading it. What she did to Seth in the end was just low. It was goddamn low, no matter how much she wanted that goddamn meth. Maybe this nausea wasn't just because of the story but also because of what she did.

This book is something to be taken seriously. It’s heart-wrenching and really depressing but it was really good. I have to say that it was very well-written because of all the emotions it gave me while and after reading this book.

To those who are planning to read this, approach with caution but never back down.

Book Blitz: Frailties of the Bond (Excerpt + Guest Post + Giveaway)

Frailties of the Bond
Title: Frailties of the Bond
Author: Angela Brown
Publication Date: March 4, 2013
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | Kobo

Synopsis: NEO – Network of Extraordinaires and Otherworldlies:

Those who answer the call from NEO play their part in maintaining balance in our ever-changing times. With power-hungry malcontents, jealous gods, and even those with misguided good intentions, the fate of our world has oft been held in the hands of unsung heroes such as those that are members of NEO.

But before NEO, these heroes and heroines had lives, loves, issues and interests that didn’t involve saving mankind.

In Frailties of the Bond, it only takes one bite to change a life…

After a hiking trip gone wrong, sixteen-year-old Luca should have been dead. Since then, he’s drifted from one school day to the next, annoyed by the looks of suspicion. When a vampire attack claimed his mother and forced his first shift into animal form, Luca set out for Texas, vengeance bound, only to discover so much more when Aimee crossed his path.

Flesh-born of vampire parents sixteen years ago, Aimee shouldn’t exist. Magic, though, made dreams come true for an undead couple desperate for a child all their own. But this magic came with a price, a cost Aimee discovered after one forbidden bite.

Excerpt:

The pulse of the bass line traveled across the field and rattled the body of Mouse’s Challenger, the rave at full swing. Glow sticks waved in the air to the fast-paced rhythm of synthesizers high on musical ecstasy. The bouncer tore our tickets, spouted his “don’t cause a riot” act then gave us a head nod, universal for “get the hell in already”.

Shelley drifted into bloodlust, fangs extended, eyes glossed over with a dull yellow sheen. By party’s end, they would be a blazing gold after she got her fill. She peeled from us and disappeared from sight.

Mouse stayed with me just long enough for a Thor look-alike to ask her to dance. She chucked me the peace sign and left.

There I stood. All alone. By the bar.

Three feet away, a vampire fed on a girl. Out in the open! It was a spectacle I hadn’t seen before. Her blood ran like red tendrils pooling onto her cleavage. Sloppy eater.

“Care for a Bloody Joey?” the bartender asked, pulling me out of the moment, and probably saving me from the embarrassment of gawking like the newbie I was.

“A bloody who-what?”

“Bloody Joey. Mary’s supply always depletes five minutes after the party starts. We still have Joey, Alexander and Alice. I’d recommend Joey. His blood has a smooth texture.”

I was stuck, too ashamed to ask if he would put the blood in a cup or pass the person over the bar.

Review: Dirty Red

Dirty Red (Love Me With Lies, #2)
Title: Dirty Red
Author: Tarryn Fisher
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis: Dear Opportunist,

You thought you could take him from me, but you lost. Now, that he's mine I'll do anything to keep him. Do you doubt me? I have everything that was supposed to be yours. In case you were wondering; he doesn't ever think about you anymore. I won't let him go....ever.

Dirty Red

Leah Smith finally has everything she has ever wanted. Except she doesn't. Her marriage feels more like a loan than a lifelong commitment, and the image she has worked so hard to build is fraying before her eyes. With a new role and a past full of secrets, Leah must decide how far she is willing to go to keep what she has stolen.

Review:
"Their story will never be over."

Just to clarify, that quote talks about Caleb and Olivia, not Leah.

Warning to those who haven't read The Opportunist yet. I tried to censor this review but there might still be some spoilers here, so proceed at your own risk.

***

To those who hated Leah in the first book, be prepared to have the full-experience where you will seriously consider harming her. I was already wary about reading this because who would want to read the POV of a character you obviously dislike. The first page even manage to piss me and fuel my hate for her.

This started a probably almost a year after Caleb and Olivia's heart-wrenching good bye. With the baby, I seriously expect that maybe Caleb will finally be happy with his family and I am dreading it. A cynical part of me tells me that maybe this will just lead to a closure between Caleb and Olivia but will not bring them back together. After all, Olivia [spoiler]is now married to someone who's actually nice[spoiler]. Luckily, having a baby brings out Leah's true colors.

Since Caleb always wanted a child, he was beyond happy when Estella was born. He got the name from his favorite book, Great Expectations, and guess what? Leah started to think that this is all about Olivia, once again. Actually, she thinks Caleb's every move is because of Olivia and it led her to decide about things based on her. She always gives malice to everything Caleb does and lives behind Olivia's shadow on her own doing.

In this book, we will get to know the real Johanna Leah Smith and her back story. Yes, it was sad and I did sympathize about it but that was not an excuse for what she has done. What I really don't like about her, aside from being a bitch, is how she lived her life in pretense just to have Caleb or her father's approval. She always wanted to be the best but she wasn't even herself.

Here's some awesome stuff Cammie said in Leah's face, by the way:
"They spark. When they're together, it's like putting a hurricane and a tornado in the same room – you can feel the tension. I didn't believe in the cliché of soul mates until I saw them together."
"Now, you've won the guy...and the baby. You won. So, why are you asking about Olivia?"
"There's a possibility that you feel like you're worth more than being Caleb's marriage of pity, and if that's true then you should jump ship now. It's only a matter of time before the Caleb/Olivia saga starts up again."
Nailed it, right?

As usual, the last chapter brought the bomb and it didn't failed to impress me, although I had some feeling about it. I am so glad Caleb is finally starting to realise how stupid it is to stay in his marriage. Though this book focused on Leah, it also provided some clarifications about Caleb's actions and feelings and I assure you, you will love it.

It might be weird to feel happy about someone's downfall but this just proves that karma is a real bitch and it came back to make Leah's fears come true. Now what I need is the third book and an epic reunion.

PS,
Here's a teaser of Thief, the third and final installment in Caleb's POV. Tweet, comment, email or message me on Goodreads about your thoughts. I want more people to discuss this series with.

Review: The Rules

The Rules (Project Paper Doll, #1)
Title: The Rules
Author: Stacey Kade
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | TBD

Synopsis: 1. Never trust anyone.

2. Remember they are always searching.

3. Don’t get involved.

4. Keep your head down.

5. Don’t fall in love.

Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”

But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

Review:
"Pretending to feel something you don't can often lead you to the real thing, in some form."

The Rules was surprisingly awesome. It went beyond my expectation and was really enjoyable. Most sci-fi stories happened in the future or are post-apocalyptic but this one is different. It happened at present time, where aliens are still considered freaks and mean girls in high school is still a trend.

The first time you read it, you might say that this is just another high school story--unpopular girl with a very loud and insecure best friend, a mean girl who is the granddaughter of the biggest employer and a guy who's part of the mean girl's inner circle who eventually realises that he had enough of all the things this mean girl has done. Yes, it's quite cliche but here's the catch: that unpopular girl is an alien/human hybrid with awesomesauce powers that could be a weapon.

What made me feel on edge is the looming threat in every move Ariane makes. I'm freakin scared for her! But I also want her to forget the Rules and have fun. Every page made me guess what will happen next. It kept the suspense till the end. And the freakin revelation was some holy-shit moment for me. I seriously didn't see that one coming!

The characters were amazing. They had made a good impression especially Rachel. Her character wasn't made to just fill a spot to make the high school plot believable. (yes, because there's a mean girl in every high school) She was very relevant till the end. I even think she'll become a turncoat in the future.

I also loved how it ended as if really meant that the first part is done, like the next book would mean that their adventures will be another chapter in their lives. It wasn't a cliffy but it still made me want to read the next book ASAP. A really amazing start to a series. A very cool and unique sci-fi story.
